Evolution of Management Theories

We looked at an organization as a system with the Linked Management Models and the Evolution of Management Theories Organization Style Chart.

From Bartol and Martin, Primis Catalog, "Pioneering Ideas in Management."  we briefly talked about a couple of the ideas on managing people.  These points are covered well in you book on pages 34 through 56

We talked about the different viewpoint classifications found on page 34 and some of the different classifications under each. (Scientific Management,...Bureaucratic Management,... Hawthorn Studies,... Management Science,... etc.)  Some of the graphics are below.

  3. Complete the "Organizational Climate Questionnaire."  Module 2/MHR 4410.
  4. Bring to class a copy of your organization's (site of your project theses) mission statement/vision statement.
  5. Bring to class a copy of your organization's (thesis site) structure chart.

  3. Read through the "Alcohol Rehabilitation Case, "MHR 4410"
  4. Bring to class a copy of your organization's (site of your project thesis) mission statement/vision statement. (some have done this already)
  5. Bring to class a copy of your organization's (thesis site) structure chart. (have done this already)
  • Go to this link to see some hints on writing the papers.
  • For this paper you have the following choices: (1) write about something you are reading for class or something related to the class lectures.  Compare this to your thesis or your job.  (2) Add information to the website.  You may break this up into small pieces and look at several different points on the site. You may use your personal experience.  It may or may not end up on the site but you are welcome to try.
  • Send me only one file with the cover letter first, then the report after a page break.

Organizations as Open Systems figure (Figure 1 in book page 8) is similar to the Drivers of Change Model.  Compare these with the Weisbord's Six Box Model on page 19 and the Mobile of Excellent Management.

General Makeup Instructions and Assignments for Missed Classes

  1. Read all of the material for your missed class.
  1. Do all of the required homework for the class you missed.
  1. Go to the website and study the slides or other material.
  1. Write a short report on the reading material, homework and website material for the class you missed (just enough to cover everything missed).
    1. In your report explain how the homework, reading material and website may apply to your work or thesis.
    1. Remember to always include a cover letter (Cover letter in 1st person, the paper in 3rd person).
    1. Send the paper in electronically to craigastevens@westbrookstevens.com
